How to make a candle from a mug

If you love coffee and have a collection of coffee mugs, you might be wondering what to do with all of your ceramic mugs. A mug candle can also make the perfect gift for a friend or family member since you can customize it with their favorite scents. Creating a candle from a mug is a simple and fun DIY project. Follow our steps below to make your own candle.

  1. Choose your Mug

You can choose pretty much any ceramic mug for your candle. Just keep in mind that the bigger the mug that you choose the more wax you will need. If you’re giving the candle as a gift, consider a mug with the receiver’s favorite quote or a memorable image.

  1. Melt the Wax

Next, you will need to melt your wax. You can use whatever wax that you like. To melt the wax, fill a medium-sized pot halfway with water and bring it to a boil. Fill a glass bowl (or a smaller pot if you don’t have a bowl) with your wax and place it inside the bot once the water is boiling. Your wax will melt much faster if you shave it into flakes before adding it to the bowl.

  1. Prepare the Mug

While your wax is melting, you can prepare your mug. Place your wick in the center of the candle. Use pencils, popsicle sticks, or whatever else you have available to secure the wick. If needed, you can use a piece of scotch tape to hold it in place.

  1. Stir in Fragrance

Once your wax is melted, you can stir in the fragrance of your choice. This will need to be done quickly to ensure that your wax does not start to harden. You can use as much or as little fragrance as you like. It might smell really strong at first, but the smell will face a bit once the wax hardens.

  1. Pour the Wax

Next, you will need to pour the wax into your mug. It helps to have a second person to hold the wick to make sure that the wick stays centered. Once your wax is poured, make sure not to move the mug and let it dry. When it’s all dry you can cut the wick to the desired length and light it.

Your ceramic mug candle could make the perfect gift for someone you love or keep it for yourself to enjoy. If you tried this DIY, what worked well for you? Tell us in the comments!
